In the first webcast of TurkuazLab, moderator Dr. Tuğçe Erçetin and guest Prof. Jennifer McCoy from Georgia State University discuss “Polarization, Democracy, and Strategies”.

The main themes addressed in the discussion are the future of democracy after the USA elections, affective polarization, the relation between polarization and the pandemic, populism and polarization, the role of the female leaders in terms of democracies, and strategies of mitigating polarization.

New Article of Emre Erdoğan for German Marshall Fund (GMF)

Emre Erdogan, TurkuazLab Scientific Coordinator, wrote an article for German Marshall Fund of the United States (GMF) titled “Is Polarization Turkey’s Fate?”. In the article, Erdoğan evaluated the outputs of the elite survey and working group meeting held within the scope of the Strategies and Tools for Mitigating Polarization Project (TurkuazLab).

Dimensions of Polarization in Turkey 2020 Survey Results

Dimensions of Polarization in Turkey 2020 Survey results will be shared via a webinar in English on December 22, 2020, 9.00 AM EST / 03.00 PM CET / 5.00 PM Istanbul. Emre Erdoğan, TurkuazLab Scientific Coordinator, Nora Fisher Onar, Assistant Professor of International Studies, University of San Francisco, and Paul Levin, Director of the Institute for Turkish Studies (SUITS), Stockholm University will discuss polarization in Turkey based on the survey results.

Dimensions of Polarization in Turkey 2020 Survey is part of an ongoing project entitled “Strategies and Tools for Mitigating Polarization in Turkey” (TurkuazLab), run by the German Marshall Fund of the United States (GMF) in partnership with the Istanbul Bilgi University Center for Migration Research (BILGI-Migration) through financial support from the Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency (SIDA). The face-to-face survey was conducted in 29 provinces around Turkey with a sample of 4000 people representing 18+ population.

Emre Erdoğan, TurkuazLab Scientific Coordinator, Pınar Uyan Semerci, Centre for Migration Research Director, and Özgür Ünlühisarcıklı, German Marshall Fund (GMF) Director of Ankara Office will present and evaluate the survey results.

An Elite Survey and a Follow-up Workshop were Conducted

An elite survey and a follow-up workshop were conducted with experts from around the world on polarization, with the aims to create a deeper understanding of polarization in general and in Turkey and developing strategies to mitigate it.

In the elite survey, which consisted of 4 stages, the participants were asked to express their opinions on the causes of and solutions to polarization and to put these opinions in an order of importance. At the last stage of the survey, they rated the feasibility of the solution suggestions for mitigating polarization.

Based on the elite survey, a follow-up workshop was conducted with international experts to share the elite survey results on November 30, 2020. In the workshop, moderated by Özgür Ünlühisarcıklı, German Marshall Fund (GMF) Director of Ankara Office, Emre Erdoğan and Pınar Uyan Semerci presented the survey results on the causes of and solutions to polarization and their feasibility. As expert discussants, Ersin Kalaycıoğlu and Emilia Palonen shared their evaluations about the elite survey. Following the survey results and evaluations, the participants discussed polarization in general and in Turkey, and the strategies to mitigate it.  The elite survey and the follow-up workshop contributed to create a deeper understanding of polarization and to develop feasible strategies.

TurkuazLab website, as well as a platform to share project outputs, will be a comprehensive resource center for the polarization and presence of polarization in Turkey.

TurkuazLab aims to raise awareness in Turkish society about polarization and the harm it is doing and to develop strategies and tools for mitigating polarization. TurkuazLab has launched with the partnership of the Marshall Fund (GMF) and Istanbul Bilgi University Center for Migration Research and through the financial support from the Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency (SIDA).

On the TurkuazLab website, you can find detailed information about the Lab, project outputs, events, and activities to be organized within the scope of the project. At the same time, you can view the recent studies in Turkey and in the world, and you can follow the academic sources in the polarization literature, media, and blog contents.
